What's this all about?
As a group of schools and community organisations in Basingstoke & Deane, we are deeply concerned about the safety of our children. Hampshire County Council is reviewing all crossing patrols as part of its budget strategy for 2026. This could lead to significant cuts to the School Crossing Patrol Officers (SCPOs) service - our beloved "Lollipop" people!
We firmly believe that SCPOs provide an essential service that ensures the safety of our children on their way to and from school. Their potential removal poses a serious risk to child safety. According to RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents), there were 15,976 child pedestrian casualties in Great Britain in 2019 alone. SCPOs play a crucial role in reducing these numbers by helping children cross roads safely during peak traffic hours.
We understand that budget cuts are necessary but urge the council not to compromise on child safety by cutting down on SCPO services. Please join us in urging Hampshire County Council not only to maintain but also enhance this vital service for our community's future generations' safety and well-being. Sign this petition today!
